I am going to see Jolie Holland play live tomorrow. I really like the way she sings and how her songs are written. She's got a great way of phrasing, and seems to have a great wanderlust in a lot of her songs.
I do a lot of music-related art. I think my work is more directly tied with music than it is with other visual art. The reason is that while drawing, you can feed directly off music. It has a direct relationship with the rhythm of your line and the motion of your hand. I like all kinds of music depending on my mood and also what I am drawing.
This song, "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime", was written by E.Y. "Yip" Harburg, and became a sort of anthem for the Great Depression. It's a heart breaker. But then again, I kinda like to have my heart broken. Then again, I think I mighta been born with a broken heart. My, how emo.
